Unsung Hero of the Year Award.

Recognising someone whose hard work, kindness or commitment often happens behind the scenes but makes a genuine difference to others.

This award celebrates a colleague, volunteer, business owner, community member or organisation that can always be relied upon, supports others without seeking recognition or quietly goes above and beyond.

This category was judged by a panel made up of members of the Newcastle-under-Lyme BID Board and team, alongside a representative from Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce.

The shortlisted nominees were selected based on the strength of their nominations and the difference their contribution makes to others. The winner will be announced at the LoveNUL Business Awards on Friday 9th October.

The Shortlist

Box Ya Sox Off

The Box Ya Sox Off team was recognised for its collective commitment to continuing the work of founder Ewan Welsh following his sudden death in September 2025. Together, the team has carried forward Ewan’s ambitions for the club and wider community through children’s boxing, mixed adult classes and mental health support.

Judges valued the team’s dedication during an extremely difficult time. Their work has kept an important community activity going, providing a welcoming space for connection, exercise and support.

Caring Hands & More

Caring Hands and More was praised for providing care with empathy and a willingness to go beyond everyday expectations. The team’s approach focuses on the individual and on improving the experiences of the people it supports.

Judges particularly valued the outings organised for people living with dementia. These experiences offer enjoyment, stimulation and opportunities to remain connected with the wider community, demonstrating care that extends beyond essential day-to-day support.

Newcastle Staffs Food Bank – Newcastle Centre

Newcastle Staffs Food Bank – Newcastle Centre provides a respectful and non-judgemental welcome to people facing financial hardship. Alongside emergency food, its volunteers help people access practical advice and wider support that may address the circumstances behind their immediate need.

Judges recognised the quiet but significant work carried out by the team. By bringing together residents, volunteers, businesses, supermarkets and community organisations, the Foodbank turns donations of food, time and funding into practical support for people across Newcastle-under-Lyme.

LifeWorks

LifeWorks were recognised for the support Aimee and the team provide to people of all ages with ADHD and autism. Their work helps individuals and families access understanding, practical help and a community in which they feel supported.

Judges valued the genuine care behind this work and the difference the team makes without seeking attention or recognition. LifeWorks’ quiet and consistent support reflects the spirit of an unsung hero.

The Lyme Trust

The Lyme Trust has supported people facing homelessness, mental health difficulties and related challenges for more than 50 years. Its Newcastle accommodation provides 84 rooms, giving residents safety and a stable base from which to begin rebuilding their lives.

Judges valued the kindness, practical help and personal support described by residents. Their experiences show that the Trust provides more than accommodation, helping people develop friendships, rebuild confidence and make progress during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
